"Beauty and a Beat" is a song by Canadian singer Justin Bieber from his third studio album Believe (2012). Max Martin, Anton Zaslavski, and Savan Kotecha wrote the song, with additional lyrics written by Nicki Minaj, who also lent her vocals to the track. It is instrumentally complete with a heavy drum machine and "rushing" synthesizers.[1] Lyrically, it speaks about Bieber wanting to take his love interest to a club, where they can "party like it's 3012". It is the only song from Believe that Bieber did not co-write.
Following the release of Believe, "Beauty and a Beat" debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at 72 due to strong digital downloads. After the release of the song's music video, it re-entered the Hot 100 at number 72 and has so far peaked at 5.[2] It also debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 at 47.

Background

"Beauty and a Beat" was written by Max Martin, Anton Zaslavski, Savan Kotecha, and Onika Maraj for Bieber's third studio album, Believe (2012).[3] Maraj, known by her stage-name Nicki Minaj, provides guest vocals on the track.[4] Bieber later spoke upon the collaboration with Minaj, saying: "I wanted a female rapper and I think that she is the best choice. I felt she just fit on the song perfectly."[5] Kyle Anderson of Entertainment Weekly called the song "swagalicious."[6] An album of remixes was released on December 11, 2012.

Composition and lyrics

Guest vocals are provided by rapper Nicki Minaj.
"Beauty and a Beat" is an uptempo electronic dance[7] and electropop[8] song that lasts four minutes and 58 seconds.[1] It also contains elements of R&B.[9] Sarah Deen of Metro described it as a "frantic dance track",[7] while Rolling Stone's Jon Dolan called the song a "disco-inferno."[10] "Beauty and a Beat" contains fast-paced drum beats and an acid house break down.[7] Bieber's girlfriend Selena Gomez is referenced in the song during Minaj's rap;[7] "Justin Bieber/ You know I'm gonna hit 'em with the ether/Buns out, wiener/But I gotta keep an eye out for Selener."[10] Jason Lipshutz noted the rhythm between "wiener" and her given name.[8] It is in the key of C major also written by Mohammed Hayder Elnayir

Critical reception

Critical reception towards the song was mixed. Many contemporary critics praised Bieber's attempt to reach an audience not usually interested in his music, while others criticized its lyrics and Minaj's rap. Andy Gill of The Independent listed the song in his "Download this" category during an album review for Believe.[11] Laura Sassano commented on the song upon its leak, saying: "The new song continues Justin's quest to grow up and be taken more seriously as an artist".[12] Becca Longmire of Entertainmentwise felt that the song was impressive; she also noted the vibes of R&B and compared this with Bieber's previous single "Baby".[9]

Music video

A video was shot for the song September 8th through the 9th, which Nicki Minaj tweeted "Just wrapped up a VERY cool video :)" which Bieber retweeted. On October 6, Minaj tweeted. "OMFG!!! I am speechless. just saw the @justinbieber "beauty and a beat" video. This $#&% will change the game. Blown away. Wait til u c it!" On October 11th, Minaj then tweeted, "uh oh...the barbz have a BIG surprise cmng tmrw." Justin later tweeted, "noon." Minutes before the video premiered, Minaj tweeted, "I'd be by a computer in 20 mins if i were u..."
The music video premiered on VEVO October 12, 2012. It features Bieber at a party, with most scenes taking place in a swimming pool at Raging Waters in San Dimas, California. Minaj makes an appearance during her verse of the song standing in the water, rapping alongside Bieber.
The video broke the VEVO record for having the most views in a 24-hour period with 10.6 million, beating the previous record which had been set by One Direction's "Live While We're Young" (8.24 million).[citation needed]
The music video was written and directed by Justin Bieber along with co-director Jon Chu.[13] Most of the clip was recorded on a GoPro Hero 2 by Bieber, with some footages filmed on the Olympus Tough TG-1.[14] ××
