Background and composition

One Direction in Stockholm, Sweden, May 2012, where they recorded "Kiss You".
"Kiss You" was written by Kristoffer Fogelmark, Kristian Lundin, Albin Nedler, Rami Yacoub, Savan Kotecha and Carl Falk and produced by Yacoub and Falk.[2][3] Falk, Kotecha, and Yacoub had collaboratively helmed One Direction's previous hits, "What Makes You Beautiful", "One Thing" and "Live While We're Young".[3] In April 2012, The Independent reported that Simon Cowell had challenged music's "most successful" songwriters to compete for space on One Direction's second album.[4] Falk said, "It's important to get their personalities on the music."[4] In addition, the article reported that Syco Records was working on candidates that included Max Martin and Lundin, the producers behind Britney Spears' and the Backstreet Boys' biggest hits.[4]
One Direction began recording the album in Stockholm, Sweden, May 2012—"Kiss You" is a result of those recording sessions.[2] "Kiss You" was chosen as the second US single from their second studio album Take Me Home, released digitally on 17 November 2012.[5] In a November 2012 interview with MTV News, the band explained why they chose "Kiss You" as the album's second single in the US.[5] Liam Payne explained that the song "holds a special place in our heart", and that it sets the lyrical tone for the album.[5]
"Kiss You" is an uptempo, upbeat power pop, dance-pop and teen pop song which runs for 3:04 (3 minutes, 4 seconds).[2][6] The track has a tempo of 90 beats per minute with double-time verses.[6] The song is written in the key of E major with vocal elements ranging from the note of E4 to C6.[6] Additional instrumentation includes guitar strings, piano lines and vocals.[6]

Commercial performance

Upon the release of Take Me Home on November 9, 2012, "Kiss You" entered the UK Singles Chart at number 152,[7] the Canadian Hot 100 at number 80,[8] the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 95,[9] and the French Singles Chart at number 184.[10]

Music video

The music video for "Kiss You" was directed by Vaughan Arnell.[5] Arnell had previously directed One Direction's music videos for "Live While We're Young" and "Little Things".[5] In a November 2012 interview with MTV News, the group confirmed that a music video for the track had been shot.[5] On working with Arnell, Horan stated, "I love working with Vaughan. He's such a nice fella. He gets us and exactly what we're about, and he's really easy to work with."[5] According to MTV News' Christina Garibaldi, "While the guys wouldn't give too much away about the concept of the video, they did promise their fans it will be their best yet." Zayn Malik commented, "I think the whole concept behind the video is bigger than anything we've done before. It's a whole idea and it's kind of structured, which is a little bit different than what we've done before in like a comedy way. It's really funny. We are just having fun."[5] Payne added, "There were proper sets and everything for this video, and there was a lot of hard work that went into it with the crew and everything."[5] That being said, Tomlinson has described the video as "pure stupidity", suggesting that the video will be a lighthearted and fun romp.[11]
After a delay, and the release of a "sneak peek", the music video premiered worldwide on Vevo, and later YouTube, on 7 January 2013 at 3 PM EST. The video features the band shooting different scenes via a green screen, dressed as sailors, surfers, skiers and jailers.[12] The video has been described as retro, with scenes reminiscent of the films South Pacific, To Catch a Thief and Beach Blanket Bingo, as well as the iconic music videos of songs such as The Beach Boys' "Surfer Girl", Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" and "Blue Hawaii" and Rammstein's "Mein Land", among others. The music video garnered 10.4 million views in 24 hours on its Vevo channel, just missing out on the record held by Justin Bieber's Beauty and a Beat (10.6 million views).[13]

Live performances

One Direction performed the track along with "What Makes You Beautiful", "Little Things", and "Live While We're Young" on The Today Show at the Rockefeller Center on 13 November 2012, to a record crowd estimated at 15,000.[14] "Kiss You" was included in the set list of the group's 3 December 2012 sold-out show at New York City's Madison Square Garden.[15] In December 2012, One Direction performed "Kiss You" on the finals of the ninth series and second series of The X Factor UK and The X Factor USA respectively.[16]
